Auctioneer Andrew Hayne took centre stage and the message was firm and clear. He wouldn't be stopping the auction for questions, and he might not pause to refer bids. A vendor bid of $1,700,000 opened the auction and Mr Hayne declared that no further vendor bids would be lodged after extracting a genuine offer of $1,725,000. The auction soon came to a close, passing in on the one bid. A crowd member rushed to Mr Hayne post-auction in the hope of making a late bid, but had to make do with disappointment, when he was swiftly but politely turned away.
