26 Howard Street, GLEN IRIS

BOUGHT* - $2,451,000
Leafy Glen Iris was the home for an enthralling auction on Saturday, directed by the evergreen James Tostevin. The owners had spent 26 years precisely at number 26 Howard Street and the auction felt like the same length of time with four bidders pushing the final sale price well past the quoted figure of $2-$2.2 million. Timid yet ever-present were two parties in particular who both seemed intent on getting the right result after an opening vendor bid to the tune of $2,000,000 prompted several members of the 80 –odd audience to throw their respective hats into the ring. Mr Tostevin went inside with a grin at the $2,360,000 mark as another bidder entered the ring after the reserve of $2,350,000 was quickly met. Up and up the figure rose before stalling at the $2,450,000 point, at which time the price seemed to be jumping in increments of a mere $1,000. There can only be one winner, however, as the competition dried up – eventually leaving the final man standing with a winning bid of $2,451,000.
