A picturesque setting as the sun beats down in the garden and a crowd stand around the various lines of hedges. ‘I always ask for an opening bid and one day I will get one’, jokes auctioneer Gerald Delany as he offers his customary one vendor bid, this one at $4,800,000 as he opens proceedings. Bidder 1 is in at $4,850,000 and a referral is soon taken, as much to draw out further bidding then it is to enlighten the vendor. Two more bidders soon jump in. Bids are breaking down to $10,000 amounts quickly as bidders edge cautiously. Agents dash in at $5,100,000 and it is announced on the market with the next $10,000 rise. Bidder 4 and 5 are in and rises continue in $5000 amounts until it reaches $5,305,000 when the crowd goes ‘oooooooohhhhhwwwow!!!’ – when bang!! Bidder 5 unrolls a $195,000 up bid to $5,500,000 as she sits casually on the grass. There is a $1,000 response and this gets some chuckles. Mr Delany checks his watch ‘what time is the Cox Plate running?’ $5,510,000 … and $1000, and on it goes like so. A couple of early bidders come back with their own cheeky $1000 offers, all are accepted at this stage. The seated bidder is saying no. Early Bidders 2 or 3 are looking the goods at $5,701,000 … and again …bang! … the picnicking Bidder 5 rounds up to $5,800,000 with a $99,000 rise, more oohs and ahhs, but this one is to be final. The underbidders look bruised, there isn’t another like this one about, and one of them is completely inconsolable when they dissolve into tears. Forget the Cox Plate, there are no prizes for second here.
