PASSED IN - $2,825,000
A burst of sunshine, aerobatic display overhead and the whirr of engines buzzing around the Formula One track only a short distance away created a festive atmosphere but seemed to do little to enliven the dispersed crowd of 50-plus gathered for the auction of this classical Victorian balconied terrace. The bellowing voice and extraordinary command of auctioneer Tim Derham worked well to extract offers once the ice was broken with an opening vendor bid of $2,700,000. Three bidders and a series of $25,000 rises later, the price was referred to the vendor. Once the agents returned it was obvious that the brakes were on and the property was passed in without any further bids at $2,825,000. Negotiations continued inside with a later offer of $2,850,000 still not meeting the vendor’s expectations. No chequered flag quiet yet for this grand Victorian but the champagne may not have to stay on ice for too much longer.
