Escaping the cold and wet, the crowd sensibly converged indoors and awaited the fall of the hammer. Auctioneer Campbell Ward turned down his usual outdoor auction volume and welcomed the audience. Mr Ward began with legalities followed by noting the property had features that could be improved upon as well as all the various enviable features, including the location and proximity to shops. Calling for an opening bid of $1,900,000, Mr Ward had a silent reception. Instead, Mr Ward put forth a vendor bid of $1,900,000 and asked for rises of $25,000. Two further vendor bids of $25,000 were made and pushed the property up to $1,950,000. One bidder, who had offered $1,930,000 at the same moment as Mr Ward had placed his second vendor bid, offered an additional $1,000. The bid was accepted, followed by a call for any further advances. No movement was detected from the crowd and the property passed in at $1,951,000.
